And then... she was six.
While some of us were exhausted by Sophie's birthday celebrations....
... others of us were exhilarated by her birthday joy and gratitude!
Sophie was born at 6:43 AM on Monday, October 26th, 2009. Today, at 6:43 AM on Monday, October 26th, 2015, Doug and I were in the bathroom getting ready for the day and talking about Sophie when all of a sudden we heard her footsteps enter our bedroom. (Note: our kids have clocks and they know they aren't allowed to leave their beds before 7 AM.) Sophie woke up and came downstairs EARLY right at the exact time she was born, 6 years ago (forgetting that we were on PST....!) She had no idea what an amazing coincidence that was.
Daddy had to fly out of town in the morning, but he squeezed in time to walk the birthday girl to school. It was perfect.
At the beginning of this school year, Sophie and I started our own book club: Whitfield Girls Book Club. My daughter, my now 6-year old, is thoughtful in her commentary, perceptive in her analysis, sophisticated in her vocabulary, and creative in her ideas. I'm not exaggerating; she is an English teacher's dream. She is the ideal book club member, and I have treasured our book club meetings like nothing else. 6 years ago today, when she was less than a day old, I had no idea how my heart could continue to grow and expand with love and pride for my girl. Watching her brain work, witnessing her mind make connections and ask questions, listening to her critiques of characters and plot... I am humbled. So, today, on her 6th birthday, she asked that we have a book club meeting. We sat at the dining room table, her birthday crown still on her head, and we talked. And it was the perfect ending to her birthday celebrations.

Happy Birthday, Sophie Marie!
She is 6.
6 years of hugging and kissing her. 6 years of looking into her beautiful eyes. 6 years of comforting her when cries. 6 years of celebrating her when she succeeds. When she tries. When she creates. When she grows. 6 years of watching her observe, think, reflect, question, and thrive. 6 years of being in awe of her bright and brilliant mind. Of her spunky sense of humor. Of her independence and imagination and talent. 6 years of being parents to the greatest gift we've received. She is simply amazing, and we grow more and more proud of who she is, of what she does, of how she loves, of what she gives, and of how she dreams.
We woke up on the morning of October 24th with Sophie bounding into our bed at 7:01 AM, ready for her birthday weekend to continue! The previous night, we did our traditional Red Robin family birthday dinner, followed by an evening at the Spooktacular Zoo Boise event. But, on the morning of the 24th, Sophie's excitement was explosive! It was finally the day she had been talking about for months and months: her rainbow birthday party. Feeling overly sentimental, I pulled out all of our family books to show her photos from October 24th, 2009 when I was hugely pregnant with her and drove a golf cart around for 18 holes while Doug played golf (travel back in time to that post HERE). Sitting in bed, we showed her all the photos from the day she was born-- October 26th, 2009. And then we continued through each year's birthday photos, laughing at her bald head, smiling at her toddler face, tearing up at each milestone over the past 6 years. Sophie humored us for a while, but eventually, she leapt out of bed, ready for cereal and complaining that it was still 9 hours until her party started!
And party we did. We had 14 girls over for a rainbow party-- celebrating with arts and crafts, with costumes, with silliness, and with sugar. Sophie felt loved and celebrated. She was in heaven as the center of attention-- a spot she rarely takes-- and we were thankful that all of those sweet girls came to dote on our favorite girl. She was spoiled and she deserved it.
The birthday weekend continued with lego building and lots of new toys and books. The weekend was centered around her. Today, on her actual birthday, Doug will join us on our walk to school, she will get celebrated at school, and then later at dance class. And the day will end with her dinner choice: chocolate chip waffles.
I love that her birthday comes at at time when she can take all of this love, joy, attention, and generosity and build up her reserves. I love that new friends from Kindergarten jumped at the chance to come to our home and party with Sophie. I love that old friends from preschool who have started different schools returned with glee to our home to reunite with somebody special. I love that Cameron (for the most part) understood that this was the Weekend of Sophie, and he was so excited to see what new presents she got. It warms my heart to know that my 6 year old girl could look around our bonus room and see 14 girls (and 1 brother) who came to celebrate her. Who came because they, like her mommy and daddy, are glad she was born. Who came because they appreciate her.
We all are blessed to be a part of this sweet, perceptive, smart, and creative individual's life. We all love her big time.

Our Little People
Sophie and Cameron have become these dynamic, independent, joyful little people. In what feels like the blink of an eye, Doug and I are parents to two kids who have such incredible talents, interests, and personalities.
Highlights lately:
Sophie's obsession with reading is now matched with a love for writing. She has written and illustrated several books. I find sticky notes, notecards, and cards all over the house covered in sentences and doodles. She has such a love for language, for the expression of ideas, and for experimenting with words. From playing with Barbies to playing school to playing the piano, Sophie finds ways to include writing into any game. Her spelling of words is hysterical. I'm keeping all the bits and pieces she's written so years from now, when she is some famous, full-fledged author or professor, I can show her some of the crazy ways she sounded out words!
Sophie still loves fairies and believes in their magic and mystery. She has written many tiny notes for the fairies and documented all of the "Fairy Sins" (her spelling for Fairy Signs!). Recently, the fairies left her a beautiful picture of Tinkerbell which reignited her belief.

Sophie signed up for her first run, and she completed her first 1-mile run in 12 minutes, 29 seconds! She ran the whole way (with me on the side of the road). Doug and I were again proud of her for trying something brand new, for doing her best, and for having fun! She even sprinkled fairy glitter dust on her shoes to help her fun faster. And it must have worked!
Sophie won a Cougar Pride award for the month of September at her school. She was nominated and won the "RESPECT" award for exhibiting this trait. We were so proud of her to be recognized for this characteristic after only a few weeks at school.
I started a new Girl Scout troop and am leader to a troop of 12 Daisy girls. Sophie is so sweet and wonderful, and it's a special gift to be able to work with all of the amazing girls but especially my baby girl.
Cameron has become such a smart, thoughtful, and kind young person. He gives compliments so freely and genuinely. He is gregarious and confident, running up to Sophie's teacher, other parents/neighbors, random people at the grocery store and telling them stories. He has befriended three grandmas at school pick up, and he charges toward them on a daily basis to converse. He honestly has more to talk about with them than I do. I'm the introvert around him. He loves spending time with Sophie and her friends. He was able to join in on one Girl Scout adventure, and he had awesome ideas to contribute to the group. The girls loved him.
| a sadder moment I captured! |
One night at dinner, I was cutting more slices of fruit for Cam on his plate. His finger got a little close to my knife, and I nicked his knuckle a bit with the knife; he started crying, "mommy, you knifed me! I can't believe you knifed me! Worst mommy ever cuz you knifed me." I couldn't stop laughing because all of windows were open and I'm sure neighbors wondered why I knifed my son...
Sophie bumped her head before school one morning. She sometimes doesn't have the greatest depth perception or awareness of her surroundings. So, she was being dramatic about this bump, and Cam came around the corner shaking his head at her, saying "Sophie, God wants us all to be safe. You have got to be safe cuz that's what God wants." He was serious and knew that he was egging her on. She screamed at him and he replied "I have God right here in my heart. He lives there." Then, Sophie hit Cameron and the morning deteriorated quickly. But Cameron pushed her buttons, and I quietly loved it.
Cameron's newest obsession, not surprisingly, is professional sports. He loves pretending he is Russell Wilson. He remembers the "bad guys" like the Steelers and "that Wild Cat team." But, what is interesting is his sudden love for ice hockey. He frequently requests to watch it on tv, and he talks about how "when he was a daddy" he would always take his kids to watch ice hockey. So, tonight, as I type this monster-blog-update, Doug has taken Cameron to the opening night of the Boise Steelheads ice hockey. Cameron was "so e-cited" all day long. He could barely contain himself running around the house pretending he had a puck and that he was skating. Doug just sent me this photo of their night so far, but it captures how mesmerized he is by this sport.
That completes the September and October odds-and-ends. Just when we think we couldn't be more proud of our two kids, Doug and I find more reasons to fall more in love with them. They are just cool, cool kids. Heart overload once again!
